James Russell, 88, of Tompkinsville, KY passed away Sunday, January 27th, at Monroe County Medical Center.

James was born in Bugtussle, KY on February 25, 1930, a son of the late Aire (Kirby) and Ellis Russell.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tompkinsville for 61 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in France during the Korean War. He was a Kentucky Colonel. James worked in the Monroe County School System for his whole career; he started out as a teacher at Gamaliel then moved to Tompkinsville High School, he then went to the Monroe County Central Office and he retired as the Finance Director and Assistant Superintendent of Monroe County Board of Education.

On March 12, 1955, he married Omigene (Crowe) Russell, who survives of Tompkinsville, KY.

James is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and Chuck Evans, of Brentwood, TN; two grandchildren, James Andrew "Drew" Evans of Beverly Hills, CA, and Laura Allison Evans of Los Angeles, CA.

James is also survived by a sister, Merlene Hughes, of Huntsville, Alabama.

Other than his parents he is preceded in death by five brothers, Wallace, Eugene, Willard, Ray and Herman Russell and two sisters, Charlene Howard and Beulah Deckard.

Funeral Services will be held at Yokley Trible Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 30th, 2019.

Visitation is Tuesday 3:00-8:00 P.M. and Wednesday 6:00-11:00 A.M. at Yokley Trible Funeral Home.

Burial is in Bailey Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to Rock Hill Cemetery, Bailey Cemetery, Monroe County Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund or to Tompkinsville First Baptist Church.

My heart and prayers are with you Mitzi. I got to know a side of James I had never seen before, while I spent 10 months last year in the rehab center. He talked of you often when he would see me. I had mentioned, to him, that you and I were in the same class in high school. From then on, he always made it a point to speak to me. He will be missed, Mitzi.
